At UPrep, everyone is encouraged to be a lifelong learner. Our Pumas develop essential skills, take creative risks, and engage with real-world issues, while having lots of fun along the way. Check out some moments of our community learning together.
YOGA ON THE ROOFTOP DECK
Namaste! Faculty/staff joined Upper School PE students on the ULab’s Rooftop Deck for a sunny hour of outdoor yoga.
GUEST SPEAKER ROSALIE FISH
Upper School students listened to the story of University of Washington student athlete and activist Rosalie Fish during a panel discussion moderated by the UPrep PE Department Chair and Cross Country/Track and Field Coach Kayla Robertson and 10th grade student athlete Sonya C. A member of the Cowlitz Tribe, Fish uses her platform to raise awareness of missing and murdered Indigenous women.
DRONE RACING CLUB
Academic Technology Coordinator Jonathan Delgado launched a new Drone Racing Club in our Middle and Upper Schools. Students had fun trying their hands at piloting drones through an obstacle course set up in the ULab Entry Plaza.
SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEK WORKSHOPS
During Social Justice Week, faculty/staff and students led workshops for our community that represented a broad definition of social justice. Assistant Head of School for Academics Ed Billingslea (who has his arm around his daughter, Kayla B., 8th grade) taught Middle Schoolers how to swag surf during his workshop on the history of hip-hop!
SNOW SCHOOL INTENSIVE
After exploring avalanche safety, route finding, and other important skills with our partners at Seattle Mountain Rescue, The Mountaineers, and Northwest Avalanche Center, students and faculty chaperones in the Snow School intensive put their learning into action with a snowshoeing expedition with Pro Guiding Service at Mount Baker.
ALUM IN ENGINEERING
UPrep alum Daniel Dichek ’10 (pictured third from right) visited our Engineering II class this spring. He gave feedback on the students’ energy transfer vehicle designs and shared his professional journey in the field of engineering.
SPANISH MERCADITO
Middle School Spanish students practiced their language skills by running a mini market, or mercadito, on campus. The students bartered with and “sold” handmade crafts, snacks, and school supplies to their peers and teachers, all en español.
GLOBAL LINK: COLOMBIA
Upper School students Aida R. and Umu A. read books to primary school students at Colegio San José in Barranquilla, Colombia, during their Global Link trip.
MATH HELPERS
This team of Upper School students (and Math Teachers David Peabody, Kira Rivera, and Kala Terselic) led the Math Helpers program this school year. Founded by Kira, the program strategically pairs Upper School math students with Math Helper buddies for peer-to-peer support. This creates a safe space where students can ask for help from each other, simultaneously sharpening the math skills of both the Math Helper and the student seeking support.
INTENSIVES IN ACTION
Students in the Creative Writing: Poetry intensive spent a day at Lawless Forge, a local blacksmithing studio, turning halves of horseshoes into letter openers. The purpose of the field trip was to take students out of their comfort zones for an exercise in drawing on all five senses—a skill they then used in the classroom as they crafted their poems.
ENGLISH ALFRESCO
On their final day of class, English Teacher Kim Gonzales brought her 9th grade students to the ULab’s Rooftop Deck to complete their final writing activity in the spring sunshine.
